Online configuration tool for compressors,
smartglasses in the warehouse, metallic 3D printing: digitization
is being put into practice at MDT.
The economy and
society are in the throes of the digital revolution. Long-established, leading
companies like MAN Diesel & Turbo need to tread the path of digitization in
order to perform successfully on the market in the long term.
process goes beyond technological development pure and simple. It is an
approach and mindset for combining data for analysis and interaction across
disciplines throughout the group. “We have to develop
solutions and approaches to address the problems and challenges that our
customers face on a daily basis,” Chief Digital Office Audi Lucas
explains. For MDT, this means a substantial culture change. Mobility,
innovative spirit and rapid development are important requirements for the
successful introduction of digital solutions.
still early days for the development and integration of digital offerings in
our portfolio, but we have already chalked up our first successes,” says
Lucas. At the Zurich site, for example, employees have developed an innovative
online configuration tool for MDT compressors. Customers can access the tool
quickly and easily via the internet, enabling them to put together compressors
to suit their individual needs. Without the need for long preliminary
discussions or log-in processes, they receive detailed information quickly and
without obligation on which configurations are possible, which compressors are
most suitable for a specific purpose and what it will cost. The small project
team implemented the idea efficiently and precisely in just a few weeks.
Logistics in Oberhausen has been trialing for about a year, are another
example. Transfer-to-stock and removal-from-stock processes from SAP appear
directly on the display in front of warehouse operatives’ right eye.
Operatives can also use the smartglasses to control vertical lifts, which carry
components up and down.
The development of metallic 3D printing is
going particularly well. MDT is the first manufacturer in the world to build
industrial gas turbines with standardized high-stress components made using
metallic 3D printing. MDT is also planning to use the new technology to manufacture
impellers for compressors or components for turbochargers and engines in the
Smartglasses are revolutionizing logistics processes.
