decarbonization and digitization megatrends as significant driving forces! We
want to play an active role in shaping the energy transition and exploit the
opportunities offered by digitization!
decarbonization is vital if the temperature rise is to be kept below 2°C (Paris
COP21). This means redirecting the trend away from coal towards
climate-friendly fuels and hybrid solutions for an ecological energy supply.
We are also seeing
innovations in the area of digitization in particular. These will lead to
radical changes in the power industry too:

We will offer the
customer complete solutions in the marine, power plant technology and process
industry sectors. MDT’s unique product
portfolio gives us a promising jumping-off point.
Our EPC (Engineering-Procurement-Construction)
capability in the power plant segment will enable us to integrate a variety of
technologies in a complete system. Our portfolio covers everything from engines
and turbines, through renewable energy systems, to various storage technologies
(e.g. battery containers/battery racks, thermal storage solutions and
Both the political and social currents are powerfully in favor of
renewables, as a result of which the transition to a large renewable percentage
has been fast-tracked, not least in Germany. ‘Sector coupling’ will also play a
key role in the near future. The concept of coupling transport with power
generation will lead to new challenges.
The following questions remain to be clarified: What will energy
and heat generation be like in the so-called ‘dark doldrums’, when wind and sun
are unavailable? How will the supply gap caused by phasing out lignite be
closed? Where will the energy for the mobility transition come from? Which
storage solutions are economic and can be used in both the short and long term?
These outstanding questions are causing uncertainty in politics and industry,
which is spreading to our customers too, of course. We have to relieve our
customers of this uncertainty and show them possible solutions.
As SBU Power, we want to become a leading supplier of energy
systems and offer the customer complete solutions from a single source. This
will include thermal power plants, renewables and storage technologies. We will
support our customers right from the initial project idea and assist them in
the early stages of project development. MAN's broad product portfolio will
enable us to integrate a variety of technologies in a complete system.
By combining flexible engine power plants with renewables in
so-called hybrid systems, we can open up additional markets and play to engine
technology’s strengths. Adding storage solutions, energy management systems and
liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage/transport to our portfolio will generate
further income streams. This will enable us to offer complete solutions from a
single source and so participate in growing emerging markets.
Yes, implementation is in full swing. We have deliberately brought
strategic partners on board in order to expand our know-how in targeted areas.
A new energy management system is being implemented for the in-house hybrid
power plant at the Augsburg site. At present, we are also pursuing two concrete
projects in the Caribbean with a view to helping to implement a hybrid power
grid on these islands. In the LNG field, we are playing an active role in the
market together with MAN Cryo.
What is more, we are our parent company’s go-to guys for
power-to-gas system concepts and the development of charging infrastructure
We are moving towards being a solution provider with a view to
implementing decarbonization solutions in a targeted manner, a field of
operation that holds great potential for us. We want to
help shape the future of power generation through our work. Interesting
challenges await us in a growing market. There are all sorts of new and
exciting assignments for us to carry out. It will be anything but boring. Let’s
