At the heart of South Africa’s power industry is the
state owned enterprise Eskom, which operates and maintains over 23 power stations
with a total of 260 casings on 73 steam turbines. The extensive fleet
of steam turbines consists of units of various vintages manufactured by BBC,
CEM, GEC, AEI, KWU, AEG, Parsons and MAN. Eskom have secured an exclusive
12 years spare parts supply agreement with the OEM’s for these turbines,
and on the back of this are demanding locally sourced and manufactured spares
with a directive to boost the manufacturing sector of the SA economy.
With a team of over 50 full
time production staff and 23 CNC machines, MAN ES SA Blades
Manufacturing Division has successfully grown its relationship with other OEMs
in order to become a key local partner for all blades required by Eskom.
Additional capacity and attainment of additional production qualifications will
result in MAN ES SA being not just a key supplier for Eskom, but also to
the entire global market for other OEM’s.
The blades division has successfully upgraded its CMM
capabilities, and is busy modernizing its machinery park. To further increase
its local added value, MAN ES SA has successfully built and qualified in
house blade modal frequency testing and analysis benches – work that previously
was exclusively performed overseas.
MAN ES SA also operates its PrimeServ Service shop
from the same location in Johannesburg. Its 30 service staff ensure that
the MAN fleet of compressors and turbines receive latest technology repair
solutions including photometric analysis
and laser welding.
To further capture the market on third-party business,
MAN have acquired ELCA Engineering in the heart of the Vanderbijlpark steel and
petrochemical industry. ELCA, founded 1965, have overwhelming references in all
major other OEM machines and boast a competent field service staff that is used
throughout the MEA region. With the region largest 3D measuring machine and
34 milling and turning machines ELCA is leading in large casing
fabrication and repairs.
