It is far from certain what path international
shipping will take in years to come. There is no doubt, however, that the
dilemma between further growth of the industry and the need to limit climate-damaging
emissions will require an international effort by society as a whole. For this
reason, MAN Energy Solutions, together with the Fraunhofer Institute for
Systems and Innovations Research (ISI), has developed four scenarios that take
all relevant factors in this process into account. They include economic
growth, digitalization and regulatory standards, as well as lifestyle and
attitudes in society. This produced four very different outcomes, which have
been summarized in a study entitled AHOY.
A study can’t predict the future, of course, but it can help us to
understand connections and make decisions on that basis.
Two scenarios are based on a positive trend in
which the climate targets agreed for 2050 are met or even exceeded. The other
two scenarios take a less rosy view of the future and describe what will happen
if climate policy stalls or even fails completely. “A study can’t predict the
future, of course, but it can help us to understand connections and make
decisions on that basis. I am therefore convinced that we have created a good
basis for discussion and look forward to exchanging ideas with customers, employees
and, of course, politicians,” says Uwe Lauber, CEO of MAN Energy Solutions.
