MAN ES is building a production plant for green hydrogen in Helsinki together with Quest One.
Helen Oy is building a 3 MW production plant for green hydrogen close to Helsinki’s Vuosaari docks together with MAN ES and Quest One. With this pilot project, the energy company is starting the ramp-up of industrial hydrogen production in Finland. The Helsinki Hydrogen Hub, which will be the only one of its kind in the world, will flexibly combine four sectors: electricity, heat, transport and hydrogen. Together with liquefied gas expert MAN Cryo, MAN ES is going to be the EPC contractor with responsibility for the hydrogen section of the plant, as well as for supplying the hydrogen-related components, installing them and commissioning.
What is special is that this solution combines the expertise of various MAN business areas, including Quest One, MAN Cryo and the Power segment.
PEM: The ideal technology for green hydrogen
Quest One is supplying three ME450 PEM electrolyzers for the plant’s core. This form of electrolysis is ideal for combination with fluctuating renewable resources like wind and sun. It requires less electricity per kilogram, does not have to fall back on chemicals and produces high-purity hydrogen that can be used directly. Together, the three electrolyzers will produce up to 1,350 kilograms of green hydrogen per day from renewable energy sources.
“The extensive consulting got under way in summer 2023. Barely a year later, we worked out a bespoke solution together with the customer. What is special is that this solution combines the expertise of various MAN business areas, including Quest One, MAN Cryo and the Power segment,” Fabian Baretzky from Business Development at Power explains.
