Region Americas
“The US market has gained traction phenomenally thanks to the Hydrogen Shot and Inflation Reduction Act,” says Mahesh Joshi, Head of Region Americas. The Hydrogen Shot aims to reduce the cost of clean hydrogen substantially within a decade, while the Inflation Reduction Act targets support at decarbonization projects in particular. “We see four areas of special importance: carbon capture, hydrogen, e-fuels and heat pumps. Our technologies are ideally suited to supporting these goals,” says Mahesh Joshi with confidence. What is more, the far south of Region Americas is home to ‘Haru Oni’, a project with an ultra-high profile: In Chile, Porsche AG is producing synthetic methanol from green hydrogen and wind energy using a reactor supplied by MAN Energy Solutions.

Region Middle East Africa
Carbon capture systems are in demand in Region Middle East Africa (MEA) too, as is retrofitting engines to run on alternative fuels. “Dubai and the region are key hubs for tankers, cruise ships and container ships. The future looks very promising in this segment. In the case of CCUS, we support and are actively involved in a relatively large number of projects,” says Gaby Hanna, outlining the situation in his region. The countries in the Middle East and Africa lag behind other parts of the world when it comes to climate protection, however. This applies to legislation, as well as to tax breaks and fiscal stimuli for companies that would like to make progress. Nevertheless: “Slowly but surely, the process has started and cannot be reversed. We expect momentum to build further, particularly as a result of COP28 in the UAE”, Gaby Hanna points out.

Region Asia Pacific
Without question, interest in Asia is focused on green engines with their growing order volume and huge market potential. The region is home to the world’s three largest shipbuilding nations, with China, Japan and South Korea accounting for 97.8 percent of the global market. More and more shipowners are also starting to convert their existing fleets to dual-fuel operation. “According to current estimates, around 2,800 vessels with MAN engines are suitable for such retrofits. More than 97 million metric tons of CO2 a year could be saved if they ran on eco-friendly fuels,” says Sarath Prasannan, Head of Region Asia Pacific, doing the sums. Thanks to its expertise and capacity, MAN Energy Solutions occupies a leading position in the region. Retrofit projects are chiefly directed and implemented on a regional basis. A PrimeServ retrofit team to handle the large retrofit projects expected in the next few years is currently being set up in China. Sarath Prasannan assumes that many shipowners will choose Chinese shipyards for converting their fleets to methanol and points out: “This will enable us to be at the forefront of decarbonizing the maritime industry.”

Region Europe
The European market offers a unique opportunity, as virtually all our focus technologies enjoy similar relevance. Climate protection is a key issue, with the European Union giving momentum to decarbonization efforts in the shape of its Green Deal. As an example, MAN Energy Solutions has generated a huge buzz with its heat pump project in the Danish seaport town of Esbjerg. A follow-up order for a heat pump twice the size in Aalborg has already been signed. On the other hand, there are definite reservations in Europe regarding carbon capture and storage, although this technology is playing a vital role in achieving the EU CO2 reduction targets by 2030. For Patrice Mauger, Head of Region Europe, the challenge lies in not accepting every order, but concentrating on projects with a solid basis and financing. “Cooperation with leading industry representatives, research establishments and customers is very important for us when it comes to developing comprehensive solutions. We need the feedback and involvement of our customers in particular if we are to understand their requirements and develop the right products and services for them,” Mauger points out.
