In mid-September 2023, MAN Energy Solutions invited its licensees from all over the world to South Korea. The focus was not just on a mutual exchange of ideas on technical issues, but on making a joint commitment to sustainability and climate protection.

Licensing has been part of MAN Energy Solutions’ business model for decades. The licensee family currently numbers 23 companies, mostly in Asia, but with some in the USA and Europe too. Klaus Engberg looks after the two-stroke licensees from Copenhagen. He is convinced that the large two-stroke engines in particular must be produced where the leviathans they power are built, which is primarily in the shipyards of Asia. “The engines, which can weigh up to 2,300 metric tons, cannot be transported large distances to their destination. The logistical effort involved would make no sense, neither technically nor economically, as well as being completely incomprehensible for reasons of climate protection.” Sephardim Koblenz, who is in charge of four-stroke licensing in Augsburg, gives further reasons for both engines and turbochargers being built under license: “It enables us to open up markets that would otherwise be inaccessible to us – because we are too expensive, for example, or because markets are cut off by their government’s protectionist policies. By allowing our products to be built under license, we enlarge our fleet in the field, creating a solid basis for our service business, among other benefits.”

Successful event

In order to boost personal contact, MAN ES organizes licensee conferences, otherwise known as ‘Licence Days’, every two or three years. In September 2023, representatives of our licensees and MAN Energy Solutions came together in Gyeongju, South Korea, to exchange ideas on solutions for decarbonizing shipping and energy generation. Among other things, participants discussed the use of new fuels like methanol and ammonia, engine design and technical concepts, but also production and service experiences, as well as cybersecurity. The product range covered everything from ME-GA and ME-GI two-stroke engines, to Pielstick and small-bore engines, as well as the 35/44DF-CD and turbochargers.

Shaping a climate-neutral world together

Hosts Klaus Engberg and Sephardim Koblenz were very happy with how things went: “We are delighted that our licensees are embarking on the decarbonization journey with us with such commitment. Everyone signing an undertaking at the end to shape a climate-neutral world together is anything but an empty promise. With our products and combined know-how, we can achieve great things.”
