The newly created cross-site Heat Pump
Organization started work on 1 October 2023
as part of our growth strategy. Previously,
the two heat pump teams were assigned to different areas – Zurich to Up-/Midstream and Oberhausen to Downstream. Zurich supplies large-scale heat pumps for district heating based on the HOFIM compressor. The projects in Esbjerg and Aalborg are references for the transcritical cycle (TCC) with CO2 as a refrigerant. Oberhausen supplies solutions based on geared or radial compressors with natural or synthetic refrigerants for both industrial process steam generation and district heating. The solution for the Scout Motors Volkswagen plant is an example of the vapor compression cycle (VCC). Heat pump solutions for energy recovery are also important in the energy-intensive chemical industry.
In the food industry, heat pumps such as those for Fonterra can be used for drying processes. The pulp and paper industry is another focus area, as it too requires a lot of heat energy to dry the paper web. “Heat pumps are enjoying great success in North America and Northern Europe in particular right now,” says Michael Adler, who heads up the new subsegment. “Our strategy is working: The market is there, demand is good and we’re on schedule. In order to leverage the full potential, we need to prioritize orders that are advantageous for us and continue working on our organization.” Technologically, MAN has commanded the essentials for decades, while collaboration with Product Management and Business Development is closely coordinated. “When it comes to commercialization, the task now is to consolidate the many variants and integrate disciplines like Engineering and Supply Chain.”
