MAN Energy Solutions is the professional home of people from many different nations. Three of them talk about their experiences in our company.
The main thing I like about MAN ES is ts international orientation and the worldwide contact with customers and colleagues it offers.
Bhushan Nikam,
Mechanical Engineer
in
Systems Engineering Oberhausen
“I started my career at MAN India in 2013. After a flying visit to Japan, I found my way back to MAN and restarted my journey in the systems engineering department in Oberhausen in late 2022. Since I already knew some colleagues there and had been to the site before, my onboarding went smoothly. All my colleagues are super helpful, kind and supportive. Learning German is a challenge, but key to integrating in the culture. My thanks to MAN for supporting me in this.
The move from Japan to Germany was not easy. Finding an apartment, bureaucracy, some culture shocks and the weather were some of the challenges we had to overcome together as a family. The biggest concern for me was getting my 3-year-old son, Dhruv, into nursery. I would like to say a big thank-you to Andreas Spiegel, Markus Bothe and HR/works council for providing a place through the nursery cooperation scheme. Otherwise, it would have taken a very long time through the municipal selection process. During my time in Japan, commitment, discipline, honesty, respect and kindness were some of the best traits I learned from Japanese culture, and I intend to keep them up and pass them on in Oberhausen.”
Francis Nana,
Manager Tendering
New Solutions with Power in Augsburg
“I have lived in Germany for 12 years and feel at home here – although I have seen quite a bit of the world. I was born in Cameroon. As a young adult, I went to the USA to study and also worked there after graduating in mechanical engineering. After that, life’s journey took me to India, then to Germany and MAN Energy Solutions Augsburg, first in Engineering, then in Tendering New Solutions at Power. What I especially like about Germany is that there are clear rules for communal life. I find people in Germany very courteous. It was surprisingly easy for me to integrate in everyday working life at MAN ES too, despite the fact that I did not speak any German. I was able to work on interesting and important projects right from the start. German is still a challenge for me. It would be helpful if MAN ES were to offer courses in German as a foreign language. If you learn the language early, you can interact with colleagues even more. The main thing I like about MAN ES is its international orientation and the worldwide contact with customers and colleagues it offers. Our diverse and colorful workforce sharpens awareness of other cultures and the global community. That helps us understand the world better and contribute ideas out of the box, so to speak. Incidentally, I became a German citizen three years ago and feel very welcome in this country. The only thing is that my favorite food comes from a neighboring country, as I am a big fan of Austrian kaiserschmarrn.”
Lina Staugaite,
Tax Technology
Manager in Zurich
“I was born in Lithuania, a tiny country in the middle of Europe, but soon spread my wings and went to live in other countries, including the UK and France. The current chapter of my life here in Switzerland has lasted for 10 years now. I joined MAN Energy Solutions Switzerland in January 2023. Part of my task is to bring the company into the 21st century. To that end, I am working on the integration of new technologies for digitalizing and automating processes with an eye to our global tax liabilities. Before joining MAN, I had always worked in an English-speaking environment, so the language was the biggest challenge. It was my great good fortune, however, that my boss encouraged me to take German lessons so that I could integrate with the team more easily. My colleagues are simply the best. They constantly encourage me to have small conversations in German so that I will be able to speak it fluently faster. We speak German in meetings, for example, but I can also switch to English if necessary. It is often easier for me to express myself in that language if I have to explain complex issues. At the moment, I am still building my network and getting to know the right people for my projects. For me personally, it would help if everyone would give their job title and a brief job description in Teams and CU.live. The department abbreviations are not very informative in this respect. I feel comfortable here. MAN creates an environment where everyone feels they are seen, heard and valued, and where a wide variety of people work together productively.”
